Both trains run on the same UNESCO-listed line over the Bernina Pass, 2,253 m high. The difference is the carriage, not the view.

Bernina Red Train

Tours run in one of two directions. Either way you are out for about 11 to 13 hours.

Train first

  1. Coach from Milan to Tirano, about 3 hours with a coffee stop
  2. Bernina train from Tirano up to St. Moritz, 2 to 2.5 hours
  3. Free time in St. Moritz, usually 1 to 2.5 hours
  4. Coach back to Milan over the Maloja Pass, about 3 hours

St. Moritz first

  1. Coach from Milan to St. Moritz, about 3 hours
  2. Free time in St. Moritz
  3. Bernina train down to Tirano, 2 to 2.5 hours
  4. Short stop in Tirano, then about 2.5 hours back to Milan

Bring your passport or EU ID card: every tour crosses into Switzerland. Lunch is not included, except on the Diavolezza tour.

Tour or on your own by train?

You can do the trip without a tour: a direct regional train from Milano Centrale to Tirano, then the Red Train up to St. Moritz.

  2. Tirano → St. Moritz

    Bernina Red Train over the pass, about 2 h 30. Buy the ticket in advance or at the station.

Questions about Bernina day trips from Milan

Will I ride the Bernina Express or the Red Train?

On most tours, the Bernina Red Train — the regional train on the same line, with windows that open. Only tours that list a “panoramic carriage” in their inclusions put you in the glass-roof Bernina Express, and even then only on the panoramic option.

How much time do I get in St. Moritz?

Usually 1 to 1.5 hours. A few tours plan 2 to 2.5 hours, and the Diavolezza glacier tour skips St. Moritz. If the town matters to you, use the “2 h+ in St. Moritz” filter above.

How long is the day?

Between 11 and 13 hours from Milan and back. About 5 to 6 hours of that are on the coach and 2 to 2.5 hours on the train.

Do I need a passport?

Yes. Every tour crosses into Switzerland. EU and EEA citizens can use a national ID card; everyone else needs a valid passport and, where required, a Schengen visa.

Is lunch included?

Only on the Diavolezza glacier tour, and on the lunch option of the panoramic Bernina Express tour. On all other tours you pay for food yourself — in St. Moritz, Tirano or at the coffee stop.

Is there hotel pickup?

No. All tours start at a central meeting point in Milan — near Milano Centrale, at Piazza della Repubblica or at Porta Garibaldi — or in Como town for the Como departure. One tour also picks up in Bergamo and Lecco.

Can I cancel?

Do the tours run in winter?

The Bernina line runs all year; check the calendar of the tour for your date. Between late October and late February the afternoon train ride on the St. Moritz-first tours gets close to sunset, and some shops in St. Moritz keep shorter hours in spring and autumn.

Can I do the trip on my own by train?

Yes: a direct regional train from Milano Centrale to Tirano (about 2 h 30), then the Red Train to St. Moritz (about 2 h 30). It is flexible, but around 10 hours on trains for the round trip and not cheaper than the lower-priced tours.
